Public Interest Data Literacy (PIDLit) Learning Lab
The PIDLit Learning Lab will be an experiential learning opportunity that partners Georgia State University’s diverse students with local nonprofit and private sector organizations addressing food insecurity, an issue disproportionately experienced by marginalized communities in metro-Atlanta and Georgia. The students will learn data analytics skills and use them in real-world application to center community voice in pursuing data-driven solutions to enact social change. This experiential learning lab will be embedded in a credit-bearing course that will connect students with multiple community partner organizations. Via the PIDLit Lab, students will expand their career skills and gets hands-on experience applying public interest technology toward a real-world social problem, potentially feeding them into a PIT career path upon graduation.

The Data Science for Public Service Consortium (DS4PS) aims to deepen institutional capacity in schools of public affairs in the technical skills and ethical foundations needed to effectively harness the promise of PIT in the public and nonprofit sectors.

Public Interest Data Literacy (PIDLit)
The Public Interest Data Literacy (PIDLit) initiative will focus on first-year students and underrepresented groups, expanding programs promoting data literacy for the public good. Led by efforts from the University Library, Georgia State University is committed to preparing students for data careers, including those in the public interest. We offer training on a host of data analysis tools and methods and opportunities for students to network with community partners around real-world application of data science and public interest technology. By expanding our outreach to first-year students, we hope to encourage a career pipeline that is stronger and more diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, ability, gender and socioeconomic status.
