The 2022 Public Interest Technology University Convening, hosted by the City University of New York, takes place on Oct. 28-29 in New York City. Preview what participants can expect during the interactive two days below.
Day 1 (Oct. 28): The CUNY Graduate Center
The CUNY Graduate Center, housed at the old The B. Altman & Company Building, will host Day one events for the Convening.
The B. Altman Building was built in 1913 in the Italian Renaissance style and served as a large department store for 76 years. The Graduate Center shares the building with the Science, Industry and Business Library of the New York Public Library, and Oxford University Press.
Day one will bring together PIT-UN designees and grantees for a full day of thematic workshops centered on PIT-UN initiatives and goals, with the aim of strengthening the network by measuring impact and ensuring equity, sustainability and the growth of PIT across all member colleges and universities.
The general public is invited to register to attend streaming keynote sessions and the 2022 Network Challenge Grantee reveal.

Day 2 (Oct. 29): CSI St. George (College of Staten Island)/CUNY at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden
Attendees staying in Manhattan are encouraged to take the new Fast Ferry from Pier 79 in Manhattan to the shores of Staten Island. Upon arrival, attendees will be transported to Snug Harbor for an exciting day of immersive workshops, experiential activities, and performances/exhibitions.
The College of Staten Island St. George/CUNY will host the day's events at Snug Harbor, which will serve as the stunning backdrop for PIT in Action immersive programming
The day's events kick off with a Welcome and Land Acknowledgement Ceremony behind
Building G in Shinbone Alley. This meaningful homage sets the tone for the day's focus on PIT in Action through the lenses of climate justice, racial justice, and food justice.
A Tattfoo Tan vessel-shaped sculpture, New Earth - Apocalypse Knowledge Advancement Unit, will serve as a symbol for the collective voyage attendees will take. The sculpture's intention and meaning are reflective of the day’s themes of climate crisis, survival, and surrender.
Multiple indoor spaces will serve as important gathering places for the morning sessions that will focus on a variety of issues at the intersections of work, activism, art, technology, and social justice.
In the afternoon, attendees can take part in immersive and experiential workshops related to urban farming, natural design, and sustainability.
As the afternoon moves along the path to the South Meadow, the event shifts to the UNConvening.
The South Meadow will feature a festival environment. Tented spaces will house PIT in Action demonstrations to give attendees a glimpse into the realities of climate change, disaster preparedness, and the tension between tech and all things seen and unseen.
The Closing Celebration will occur on the South Meadow stage. Attendees are invited to imagine a decolonized future of love and beauty through ritual healing, cosmic meditation, and technological engagement.
The natural forms are meant to remind us of the past as we look boldly to the future.
