It doesn’t seem possible, but summer is over and our Year 4 Network Challenge grants have hit their midway point. Since this newsletter is focused on PIT and Climate Change, below I’ve highlighted three Year 4 2023 Network Challenge grants that are exploring this intersection.
Other fall highlights from the Network include PIT Careers Month and Working Groups at the Oct. 12-13 Annual Convening at Boston University.
PIT+Climate Change in Year 4 2022 Network Challenge Grants
Miami Dade College’s work in Geographic Information System (GIS) and Climate Change created and deployed several free online courses: Introduction to GIS, Drone to Map, Flooding Simulation, and one course designed for educators on Drone Control. Through those courses, MDC continues groundbreaking research on the physically and socially vulnerable areas of coastal Miami-Dade County by collecting and analyzing hazard data such as sea level rise produced by climate change. Once that research is completed, students will use the data to do a preliminary vulnerability assessment of buildings in the identified areas. As evidenced by the recent Hurricane Idalia, the MDC project has far-reaching applications for any coastal region and for communities with vulnerable building structures.
Rochester Institute of Technology’s Year 4 project with the Navajo Nation applies PIT tools to support renewable energy and tribal energy sovereignty. A recent effort produced Navajo language videos on renewable energy as part of educational outreach. Lead student researchers at RIT and Navajo Technical University were awarded summer 2023 internships at Sandia National Laboratories. Through this full-time, 90-day summer experience, each student worked on a research paper and final presentation on renewable energy, building on their academic background and tribal membership. After their internships, approximately 20% of students stayed at Sandia as year-round interns and 11% were eventually hired as Sandia employees.
University of California Santa Cruz is conducting a 16-month training and digital investigation with student researchers across three University of California campuses to support marginalized and low-income Latin American communities affected by environmental harms. The project introduces students to digital investigation techniques that draw from the cultural capital of the students’ demographically diverse backgrounds (especially their ability to speak languages other than English) and interdisciplinary majors. The project provides much-needed research support to environmental groups, with an explicit focus on documenting the killing of indigenous environmental defenders in Brazil. Students will also help develop a toolkit for how to investigate human rights violations connected to extractive practices.
PIT Careers Month Launches Nine Career Fairs Across the Country
In February 2023, PIT-UN opened a mini-grant challenge seeking proposals from PIT-UN member institutions’ Career Placement or Career Counseling Service staff to provide full-service job fairs connecting PIT students and employers.
Nine members secured funding for fall 2023 Career Fairs, where thousands of students will get connected to PIT internships and externship opportunities within their geographical areas. The U.S. Digital Corps, Partnership for Public Service, Federal Talent Table, and other hiring organizations have reached out to the institutions to participate in internship recruitment.
After the career fairs have concluded, we will curate a dedicated listing of PIT jobs and job titles from the career fair final reports and will share them with Career Services personnel at PIT-UN member schools.
2023 Annual Convening and Working Groups
As mentioned during our Quarter 3 member meeting, PIT-UN Working Groups will gather on the morning of Oct. 12 during our Annual Convening at BU to work together on their deliverables and start sketching out their year-end reports. As a reminder, all designees should be participating in one of the four active groups:
- Midwest Regional Working Group
- Northeast Regional Working Group
- DEI in Cybersecurity Working Group
- PIT @ NSF Working Group
The Public Engagement via Wikipedia concluded their work in March and you can view their work on the Public interest technology Wikipedia page.
If you haven’t attended a working group meeting, we’d welcome you to join one. Please learn about the many PIT Working Groups and sign up here. Once you have signed up, a co-lead will reach out to you. If you have an idea for a working group, please let us know here.
